What PenSignature actually does
Most people never choose their signature. They inherit whatever they scrawled on a school form at fifteen and keep reproducing it for the next fifty years. A signature generator is useful because it lets you see the alternatives — your own name, in a dozen hands, side by side — before you commit to one.
Typed styles versus drawing your own
The Type your name tab renders your name in twelve script typefaces. This is the fastest route to a good-looking signature, and it is what most people want when they need a signature image for a document today. The trade-off is that it is a typeface, not your hand — it will look polished but slightly impersonal, and it will be identical to anyone else who picks the same style.
The Draw your signature tab captures your actual handwriting through a mouse, trackpad, finger or stylus, with stroke smoothing and pressure-like width variation. It takes a few attempts to get a version you like, but the result is genuinely yours. If you already have a signature you are happy with and you just need a clean digital copy, draw it here rather than typing it.
Transparent backgrounds, and why they matter
Every export is a PNG with a real alpha channel, which the W3C PNG specification supports natively. That means when you drop the signature onto a contract, a coloured letterhead or a scanned page, there is no white rectangle behind it. Photographing your signature on paper and cropping it never achieves this — you get a grey box and JPEG artefacts around every stroke.
Nothing is uploaded
Your name is a piece of personal data and your signature is arguably the most sensitive piece of graphical data you own. PenSignature renders everything client-side: the text is drawn to an HTML canvas in your tab, and the PNG is encoded on your machine. There is no upload endpoint, no account, and no copy of your signature on any server we control.
Is a generated signature legally binding?
In the United States, 15 U.S.C. § 7001 (the E-SIGN Act) provides that a signature “may not be denied legal effect, validity, or enforceability solely because it is in electronic form.” That is a meaningful protection, but it is not a blanket yes: the Act preserves other legal requirements, and certain categories of documents are handled differently. PenSignature produces signature images — it is not an e-signature platform and does not provide audit trails, identity verification or tamper-evident sealing. For anything consequential, use a dedicated e-signature service or talk to a lawyer.

Short answers first
Is this signature generator really free?
Yes — every tool on PenSignature is free with no account, no watermark and no export limit. The generator runs entirely as JavaScript in your browser, so there is no server cost per signature and nothing to charge for. You can download as many PNGs as you like.
Is my name or drawing uploaded anywhere?
No. Your name, your drawn strokes and the exported image never leave your device. The text is rendered to a canvas element inside your browser tab and the PNG is generated locally, so PenSignature never receives or stores what you type or draw.
Can I use a generated signature on a legal document?
In the United States, the E-SIGN Act states that a signature may not be denied legal effect solely because it is in electronic form, so a signature image can be legally valid in many everyday situations. But validity depends on intent, consent and the specific document — wills, court filings and some property transfers are commonly excluded. Check the rules for your document type, or ask a lawyer.
Why is the download a PNG and not an SVG?
Because a text-based SVG would break on most computers. An SVG that references a handwriting font only renders correctly if that exact font is installed, so opening it in Illustrator or Figma usually falls back to a default typeface and the signature looks wrong. A high-resolution PNG with a transparent background works everywhere, so that is what we ship.
What size should I export for a Word document or PDF?
The 2× export is enough for on-screen documents and email. Choose the 4× export if the signature will be printed, placed on a contract at full width, or scaled up later — PNG is a raster format, so it is much better to start large and scale down than the reverse.
Does my signature have to be readable?
No. There is no general legal requirement that a signature be legible or that it match your printed name. What matters is that you made the mark intending to sign, and that you produce it consistently. That is why practising one continuous motion matters more than perfect letterforms.
How do I put the signature into Word, Google Docs or a PDF?
Download the transparent PNG, then insert it as an image. In Word use Insert → Pictures and set text wrapping to "In front of text" so you can position it over a signature line; in Google Docs use Insert → Image; in most PDF readers use the stamp or image annotation tool. The transparent background means no white box appears behind it.
